Google Into Fonts! Google Font API & Font Directory

Google, the search engine giant, is now taking initiatives with fonts and just launched:

Google Font Directory: It provides high-quality open source web fonts. You can browse their catalog of available fonts and copy the code required to use them on your web page.

These fonts also support HTML5 and CSS3 styling options like drop shadows, rotation, etc…

Google Font API: It provides a simple, cross-browser method for using any font in the Google Font Directory on your web page. Applying a font is easy: just add a special stylesheet link to your web page, then use the font in a CSS style.

Its similar as we add stylesheets in our web pages, the difference here is: the stylesheet is hosted at Google and comes with a parameter.

A new JavaScript library called WebFont Loader is also launched with the collaboration of Typekit and the Google. It gives you more control over font.

  • This is great and its only going to get bigger whoop

  • Just tried this, makes for some ugly text, almost unreadable. The font is too jagged, like anti-aliasing is turned off. I’ll stick with Verdana for now, thanks.

    • To me it does not render well in Chrome but in FF… looks good. Which browser you are using Bill?

  • Amazing stuff. This looks like the easiest solution for embedding fonts without necessarily embedding them. Thanks for sharing.

  • This i kind of looking like Microsoft in the old days, when they came along with there own version of Java. Why? The @fontface tecnology is doing it. We don’t need Google for this. It is allready been done. Sorry, too late this time

    • Anders, of-course @font-face did this but Google also providing a Font directory for open source fonts and this (I think) should be applauded. The other font directory, I know is Font Squirrel.

  • @font-face is a way to add the font to a site

SVG ‘font’ is more flexible and effective

  • I agree that the visual appearance of the fonts could be improved. You can see live examples of Google Font API here: http://tips4php.net/2010/06/spice-up-your-site-with-google-font-api/
